Promotion/Relegation Explained

I'm thinking we resurrect some of the NBA's old franchises to include as expansion teams.

I'm struggling to find any others that aren't based in a city that currently has an NBA team.

The prom/releg system will create an interesting dynamic when it comes to teams rebuilding. If a team of ageing veterans wants to clean house and rebuild they wont be able to do it instantly, they've got to get relegated first before they can have a chance at being in the lottery.

Free Agency is different too. All the best FAs will be attracted to the Top Division... hmm! Might be bad in a way, but a team with huge potential is still a team with huge potential.

Top US cities by population that do not have an NBA team:

Eliminations from that list:
2. San Jose - too close to San Francisco/Oakland
3. Austin - we don't need any more Texas teams
5. San Francisco - the Warriors are moving there + too close to Oakland to support 2 teams
6. Columbus - don't think Ohio can support 2 teams
7. Fort Worth - Texas again
8. El Paso - Texas again
14. Albuquerque - not sure New Mexico can support a team
15. Tucson - not sure Arizona can support 2 teams


That leaves us with:
1. San Diego
4. Jacksonville
9. Seattle
10. Nashville
11. Baltimore
12. Louisville
13. Las Vegas

Other places to consider:
Virginia Beach
Kansas City
St. Louis
Cincinnati


My personal suggestions based on market, basketball history, and potential popularity:
1. Louisville or Cincinnati - Kentucky needs a team to root for
2. Seattle
3. Virginia Beach or Baltimore (I prefer Virginia) - I don't think the DC metro could support having 2 new teams... that would make 3 within like a 2 hour drive
4. Kansas City or St. Louis - I prefer KC just because the state has a good presence in college ball
5. Jacksonville
6. San Diego

Louisville/Cincinnati
Virginia Beach/Baltimore
Jacksonville

West:
Seattle
Kansas City/St. Louis
San Diego



if you want some international teams:

Montreal (east) or Vancouver (west)
Mexico City
San Juan, Puerto Rico

Solid breakdown, but it's American focused, apart from the bottom bit. If Vancouver was on the list it would be 2nd behind only San Diego. I think they'd get a team long before cities like Kansas City or Louisville or Jacksonville. It would also be very interesting to put a team in Mexico City.

I think we can all agree the Seattle Sonics will be one of the six. These would be my personal favourites:

3. Virginia Squires/ Baltimore Bullets - I agree with Josh they're too close to have both
4. Las Vegas Aces - There's been talk of NBA in Vegas and it's got a good team name
5. Kansas City/St. Louis - Another midwest team
6. San Diego/Mexico City - A Latino team

It's the primary league that runs in real time. This league is for the off-season so it's sped up a little.

One more point to add to this discussion: the Bottom 12 teams this season will start in the 2nd Division next season, along with the 6 other expansion teams.

The Top 18 teams this season will enter the 'Premier League' (all Playoff teams + the two with the best record that didn't make the playoffs - so probably Western teams if history is anything to go by).

I think the city of Austin, TX should be in consideration for a team. In fact, I purpose the Austin Allegiance!

I say we go with the Vancouver Sasquatch like Larry Bird suggested. Just Sasquatch though because Sasquatches sounds stupid. Plus I made logos:
